About CSMB CSMB Employment:

The Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CSMB) has the following open positions:

ORNL08-68-CSD - Bio-SANS Post Doctoral Position

Project Description:
The Center for Structural Molecular Biology (CSMB) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory
(ORNL) (http://www.ornl.gov) operates the Biological Small-Angle Neutron Scattering
(Bio-SANS) beam line and user research program at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).
The CSMB conducts biological research on the structure, function and dynamics of
macromolecular systems and assemblies, with particular focus and strengths in using small angle scattering, single crystal and membrane diffraction.
CSMB has an immediate opening for a Post-Doctoral Fellow for the Bio-SANS Beam Line.
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team of chemists and bio-
physicists at the Bio-SANS facility to support and develop neutron scattering analysis of
biological macromolecules. As a Post Doc on the beam line, you will be expected to actively participate in the research activities of the group, to develop an “in-house” research project and to provide user support to a limited number of visiting researchers. Successful applicants will be encouraged to develop their own independent and collaborative research. The post represents an excellent opportunity for a young postdoctoral scientist to develop his/her expertise, broaden his/her experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. completed within the last 5 years in Physical Sciences (Physics, Bio-physics, physical chemistry or material science) is required. The candidate should be self motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels and to work within a multi-disciplinary team. Previous experience in either neutron or X-ray scattering is required. Experience with scattering applications in structural biology or soft matter science would be a distinct advantage.

ORNL08-69-CSD - Bio-SANS Research Associate Position

CSMB has an immediate opening for a Post-Master's Associate for the Bio-SANS beam line. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team of chemists and bio-physicists and will serve as the technical specialist in assisting users and CSMB personnel in the performance of experiments using Bio-SANS.

Major duties and responsibilities:
• Provide technical assistance and support to users and Bio-SANS Instrument Scientists in the performance of experiments.
• Serves as the technical specialist for the operation and maintenance of sophisticated
equipment used for neutron scattering.
• Conceives, designs, and develops improvements or changes in neutron scattering
instrument components or in other related equipment.
• Develops and presents general facility records, reports, and analyses.
• Proposes, develops, and presents procedures for operating and maintaining sophisticated equipment.
• Plans and leads in the testing and evaluation of new or developmental equipment.
• Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a MS degree or equivalent in science or engineering that was obtained within the last 5 years. The candidate should be self motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels and to work within a multi-disciplinary team. Direct experience working on X-ray or neutron scattering related instruments and software is highly desirable.

How to Apply:
Qualified applicants may apply online at https://www2.orau.gov/ORNL_POST/. All
applicants will need to register before they can begin the online application. For complete instructions, on how to apply, please see the instructions at http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pdpm/application.htm. When corresponding to
ORNL regarding this position, please reference the position title and number.

This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associates Program
and is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). This appointment is
open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran.
